S C B C SHOW

As always, our Chairman, Sue Cutts provided the warmest of welcomes to the Southern Cleveland Bay Club Show at Folds Farm on Saturday 24th July. On a fine warm and sunny day, the field included some familiar and several new faces – and horses! We had expected the coaching horses of Paul and Chris Berens-Scott from Luxembourg to join us. Unfortunately, they suffered a gearbox malfunction that left them with only 2nd gear on the horsebox. Then they were stuck on the M25 car park where traffic was snarled up due to the Farnborough Air Show and only arrived at Folds Farm at 5 o’clock. By then, the horses were ready to enjoy a good gallop around their overnight field!

MARYGOLD NIXEY
The funeral of Cleveland Bay breeder Miss Marygold Nixey was held on Monday 13th September. A Founder Member of the Southern Cleveland Bay Breeders Club, 79 year old Miss Nixey, who had been in poor health for some time, recently suffered a stroke and died on 2nd September. The great many people attending the service at Cuxham in Oxfordshire packed the small church to overflowing with about 50 mourners standing in silence outside.
Miss Nixey hunted the pure bred stallion Gerrick Majesty for many years and with him won the King George V Cup three times. She bred, produced and handled many notable Cleveland Bays which were sold both close to home and around the world. Two of her stallions, Principal Boy and Gerrick Marquis went to the Imperial Japanese Stud. We shall publish an appreciation of Miss Nixey in the near future.
Donations in memory of Marygold will go to Cuxham Church and the Stroke Association and may be made c/o Surman and Horwood, The Green, Chinnor, Oxon. OX39 4RR.

STILL SPRINGING AT 19 !
Nicola Whiteman and her partbred Spring to Glory built on their 2009 successes in Dressage to Music on 18th July. The 15.2 veteran 19 year old is by Bantry Bere out of a Welsh mare. The pair won all of their London & South East Riding Clubs DTM qualifier classes including Junior Freestyle, Pas Seul and Pas de Deux. List 1 BD judge Mary Ann Horn awarded several 10's for their performances as Mary Poppins. Nicola's mother, Dawn, said the music fitted Spring so well that they tweaked it and updated the costume as nothing else worked so well. She added "It goes to show that even 19 year old Clevelands can still do well and what a breed they are!" (From Jo Strange, 20.7.10) Photographs from Dawn Whiteman, click to enlarge.
