SUCCESS !!!
Our urgent appeal to find a new home for pure bred Cleveland Bay Mamhead Forrester has been successful. Within a few days the 16 year old, 17 hh gelding, who is by Forest Farnon out of Forest Francesca, will be leaving Hampshire for pastures new in Worcestershire. His present owner, forced by exceptional circumstances to part with a much loved friend has said that it is an immense relief to know he will be going to "such a wonderful home". We have an invitation to visit when Forrester is settled at his new yard, so expect more news soon.
We Salute Dr Andrew C. Dell
Andy is keen to thank the many people who have provided so much encouragement and support along the way and hopes he has not missed any out of the acknowledgements in his thesis. The document is dedicated to both his late mother and to the late Derek Martindale, 'A true countryman, horseman and friend' who along with Barbara Martindale did so much to encourage his interest in the Cleveland Bay. Dr Dell has now provided the link to download his Thesis from the Mediafire file sharing site - just click here. We have also posted an abstract in the Cleveland World section.
On Wednesday 25th January, Andy Dell attended a graduation ceremony in Lincoln Cathedral to receive formally his Doctorate for a thesis entitled “Genetic Analysis and Breed Management of the Endangered Cleveland Bay”.
He first became a student at Lincoln University in 2007, at the invitation of Dr Mark Curry, who recognised that his work with SPARKS was worth writing up properly. Andy says that at that time he had no idea that the work would grow to encompass DNA analysis and end up with the award of a PhD. In reality, the award is the culmination of work started in the late 1990s, which was inspired by the Cleveland Bay Horse Society's first Breed Conference at Solihull and the undergraduate work by Grant Walling on inbreeding and co-ancestry in the Cleveland Bay.
A G M
This year's Southern Cleveland Bay Club Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday 29th April at the Neighbours Hall, Great Milton, Oxfordshire. The venue will be familiar to many members and is close to the late Marygold Nixey's Harrington Stud and about one and a half miles from junction 7 of the M40. If you are not sure how to find the location, just click Directions to Neighbours Hall for comprehensive information which can be downloaded and printed out. The meeting is scheduled to start at 2.30 p.m. and will be followed by light refreshments. It would be appreciated if members did not arrive at the hall before 2.15 p.m. as a committee meeting will still be in session! We shall be sending out the usual notices and additional information in the near future. If you have any other queries, please contact our Secretary, Rona Parry, on 07860 953 726 (anytime) or 01883 348285 (evenings only).
A VERY LONG PERSPECTIVE
We are starting 2012 by being the first to publish an extraordinary article by Henry Edmunds in which he describes a compelling history of the Cleveland Bay stretching back to Roman times. Henry's wide-ranging historical research over four years and sweeping narrative demonstrates how the progenitors of today's breed crossed the breadth of empire to guard its northern border and were the finest cavalry of the age. The story continues down the centuries to modern times with an interesting and novel option should the breed ever become terminally challenged. Henry Edmunds' family has been breeding Clevelands for 126 years at Cholderton near the Hampshire/Wiltshire border. He is on the Committee of the SCBC and is currently President and a Council member of the CBHS. To read the article, which will be a permanent feature in the Cleveland World section, click here.
RESIGNATION
We understand that there has been a resignation from the Council of the Cleveland Bay Horse Society. Emily Williams, who was a member of the Promotions and Publication Committee, has withdrawn for personal reasons. Presumably, this will lead to the vacancy being filled by the candidate with the next most votes in last October's election. We expect to see more details on the CBHS website soon.
New Members
It is our pleasure to welcome two new members to the Club. Linda and Phil Thomson from Hampshire have recently become Cleveland Bay owners. Linda is returning to riding after a break of several years and Phil has only recently discovered the equine magic. When they decided to buy a horse they wanted to look for something 'a bit special'. Research, the critical status and an earlier acquaintance with a part bred pointed them toward a CB. This led to a visit to Wales where Colin and Margaret Green's enthusiasm for the breed was enough to convince them to purchase not one but two horses! They bought two mares, Tregoyd Given and Spirit which are proving 'a pleasure to own'. Now they are looking forward to whatever the future may hold. We hope to see them at some events this year, and maybe we can persuade them to bring their horses to the SCBC Show at Folds Farm on 22nd July.
2012 SCBC SHOW
The date has now been confirmed for this year's Southern Cleveland Bay Club Show which will be held on Sunday 22nd July. New for 2012, some classes will be qualifiers for Southwest Ponies Association Rare Breed classes. Once again, the Club event will form part of the Folds Farm Show. This proven format will ensure a good turnout and a full programme. As an added attraction this year there will be a Companion Dog Show alongside the equine classes. Folds Farm is the home of our Chairman, Sue Cutts and is near Fordingbridge in Hampshire. We shall have the schedule and entry forms available as downloads from this website in the near future.
