'TOO COSTLY' ROYAL FESTIVAL of the HORSE

The first Royal Festival of the Horse at the Stoneleigh Showground did not pass without its critics.   Top complaint was the entrance fee of 20 pounds, thought to be excessive and exhorbitant by many.   An additional charge of 15 pounds for uncovered seating around the Main Arena was labelled a rip-off by unhappy spectators.   Stallholders who said they had paid 'top prices' for their space complained of low visitor numbers and blamed high cost of tickets.   Other complaints included the "silly o'clock" start times for some classes.   Indeed there was uncertainty over the start time of the Ridden Cleveland Bay class.  Variously advertised as 7.00 a.m. and 7.30 a.m., it actually began at 7.30 a.m. even though a timetable board near the Ring still said 7.00 a.m.  An official opening time for the Show of 9.00 a.m. added to the confusion.   At least the weather was good!   Posted 15.8.10

The CLEVELAND BAY CLASSES at the 2010 ROYAL FESTIVAL

Despite a very early start to the Cleveland Bay classes (before the official opening time of the show) on the first day, Friday 9th July, there was a reasonable number of entries.  There can be little doubt that high costs, including fuel, have deterred many owners.   However, among those competing were horses from as far afield as Devon and Yorkshire.   Surprise of the day was Willow Annabel, a 14 year old mare new to the show scene, who won her class and went on to gain the 'Woodman' Perpetual Challenge Trophy for the Best Cleveland Bay.
